Question Clutch Problems

The clutch self adjusting mec broke on my wifes 1996 1.8 zetec escort the otherday. When I was changing gear it just blew apart from the top of the clutch pedal. I know my way around cars (most of the time!!!) so purchased a replacement (a very cheap to buy plastic part) but had to admit it looks a real nasty job as everything is right up under the dash. There does not look enough room to dismantle the pedal & shaft from on the car so with much hand and wrist grazing I have got the pedal bracket undone but there is now not enough room to get the pedals down & out of the car. I must be going wrong somewhere, can anyone help a sad desperate man PLEASE??

I wonder if it would help to pull the seat out? Would give you a little room to lay on your back and work.
