drivebelt noise

The drivebelt on my car keeps making noise. It's a squeak about every 1/2 second or so at idle, and gets more rapid as engine speed increases. I'm just wondering if there is any way to quiet the belts/pulleys, or does this sound signify impending doom for my belt? Looked at the pulleys while my car was idiling and none of them looked like they had excessive play (none were wobbling). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
