Are they broken or just need adjusting?

No more adjustment left and brake won't hold even on SLIGHT grade. New pads and calipers installed.

Try taking the adjusting nut off at the parking brake handle and stacking some flat washers under it. Will give you some more adjustment.

Re: 1991 escort gt parking brake cables

Another person on the forum was having problems with the parking brake holding on his rear disc brakes. There is a screw plug on the back of the caliper. Take it out and insert an allen wrench and turn it clockwise until the pads are up against the rotor. Then back off the gear 1/3 of a turn. Replace the screw plug and tighten it. Like I said, this other person's parking brake wouldn't even hold on a slight incline. After adjusting the caliper piston, his parking brake held. I'd sure attempt to adjust it before getting new parking brake cables.

Dave,
Thanks for the tip. Had it to the local ford dealer and I would hope that he knew how to adjust the caliper but as soon as I can get my hands on the car, daughter has it at college right now, I will check that out. Did get a response from a ford parts dealer that said the right cable was still availible for 89.00 but not the left one. Go figure. Anyway thanks.

Roger

I know how hard it can be to find E-brake cables it took 3 months for 2 different parts places to find them. and one was a ford dealership. I also recieved a cable that didn't fit! how about that...
One of the cables came from the dealership and the other a got from Napa and still the mechanics could not get it to hold so I will take the advice from above with adjusting them off 1/3. But the total cost of the cable from Napa was 54.00 CDN. and the one from the dealership was about the same.

Cheers
Ryan

Talking Re: 1991 escort gt parking brake cables

Roger,

I had the same proble with 95 GT. There is a bolt on the back of the caliper (14mm) once you remove the bolt you will see a hex screw inset in the hole. I used a 5/16 allen wrench to turn the screw. That solved my problem with the E-break not working after replacing the rear pads.
Hope this helps.

Re: 1991 escort gt parking brake cables

I bought a right side cable for my 92 GT a couple years ago from NAPA.

When you pull the brake lever, is the cable at the rear brakes pulling the lever arm that actuates the brakes?
