Igniton Control Module or Crank Position Sensor

95 grand am 2.3 DOHC quad 4

Let the idle while shooting the breeze for about 1/2 hr, temp stayed a constant 220, went to leave and the car died on me, fired once but then died again. Left it sit overnight, fired and ran fine the next day, no problems since. Im thinking its the Ignition Control Module (between the cams by the coils), but im not sure, i've heard when the crank postion sensor is ready to go out it will do the same thing, (by the way the crank position sensor was new about a year ago). I have a spare used ignition control module, and plan on having the tools with me to change it if necessary, but know how hard the crank position sensor is to change after it swells up! Any educated guesses as to which one of the two could have caused this? Plan on having the codes checked when I have time, until then any guesses?

Re: Igniton Control Module or Crank Position Sensor

No guesses whatsoever. This sounds like a fluke in that the CPS should not fail in that length of time and the ignition module can cause stalling but they will usually repeat multiple times if they fail. I'd say just keep an eye on the car and if it stalls again hopefully it will post a code. If not then the next best thing to do would be to replace the ignition module first and then the CPS. If the ignition module is the older of the two that is where I would start.

thanks for the reply GTP Dad, im starting to feel it was a fluke, even though I haven't driven it much since that night. I also found it hard to belive that the crank position sensor would fail it such a young age, but I have seen stranger things happen before.

Anyone have a ignition module fail? Did it just quit, or did it give you some warning, such as my no start, then start condition.
