Question 99 Cirrus Transmission problem?

Hey, I was with my girlfriend driving her Cirrus about 65-70 or so down the PA turnpike, when the speedometer needle started jumping all over the place, then eventually just settled to zero and then the engine light came on, it was still working but we stopped on the side of the road to check fluids...whatever, ya know. Anyway when we restarted it the speedometer simply read zero and I could see the engine getting to 4.5 rpms and not going very fast...I took it to a dealer briefly (it was evening, they were closing, we were an hour from home) and he said it's probably a transmission sensor...does that sound right to everyone? Has anyone had any experience with this before? any help would be very appreciated, thanks!
