Question Questions about DVD+R DL burning

Hi all, my dad and I jsut bought some dual layer DVD+Rs for movies and I jsut found out my drive doesnt have the RW symbole with DVD+R DL ReWriteable...do the drives need to be special for dual layer DVD burning or can a regular DVD+R/RW drive do the job? Help would be appreciated. THanks!

If you have nero installed, you can simply click on the recorder tab -> choose recorder; and your drive capabilities will be listed.

Re: Questions about DVD+R DL burning

How old is your drive and whats its brand and model number?

You do need a special Dual Layer drive to burn dual layer DVD's.

Re: Questions about DVD+R DL burning

It's an I/O Magic DVD+RW/R Dual-Format 8x DVD ReWritable Drive. It was originally external, but that was because my old PC was a low profile tower and didnt have a DVD drive so I got this one, which was interfaced for a USB 2.0 port. So I removed the interface when I got the new PC and am using it as my Master IDE drive. I bought this around sept. or oct. of 2004. The model number is IDVD8DBE and again, the company is I/O Magic.

Which leads me to another question. Whenever I insert any type of blank media, my computer crashes and Windows becomes unavailable to be restarted. But when I hit the reset button, everything works fine, and the drive can read and record the blank media, it only crashes when I insert the blank media when Windows is running. It says that it was an "Unknown Driver failure" or issue or something when I send the error report. Any ideas?

Re: Questions about DVD+R DL burning

Dosn't look like it surports dual layer, I can't tell if the refernce to "dual format" is a reference to +/-R RW or if its a refernce to the new HD-DVD format comeing out this year.

As for your PC crashing that sounds like a driver conflict.

Re: Questions about DVD+R DL burning

My dad just bought a new DVD+r DL dvd burner at Best buy for 50 bucks after rebates. Its originally 89, get it for 49, and it comes with Nero software.

You pay 90 up front but get two 20 dollar rebates. It comes with a cover so you can put a black front on it too.

Re: Questions about DVD+R DL burning

do you know how I can repair it? I uninstalled and reinstalled using the "Add New Hardware" wizardand the Device Manager. Should I try Windows Update? I had emailed I/O MAgic and they said check the jumper settings when I said it said it was a driver failure and I changed it from Primary Slave IDE to Primary Master IDE. ANother question. I have my SATA HD as my primary HD, and my IDE as my secondary Slave IDE, and my DVD drive is my primary master IDE (I only have one drive total). Should that contribute to the crashing? How should I have the drives set up? My previous set up was my DVD drive was my Primary Slave IDE while the HD was the Secondary Slave IDE.
