NASCAR rots your brain...

June 7, 2002 Logan, Ohio) -- A Logan mother wanted to stay true to her family's first love when her son was born. So she did that in a name.

Winston Iroc Nascar Yerian was born to William II and Malinda Yerian of Logan at Fairfield Medical Center on April 16. The name pays tribute to NASCAR (the professional stock car racing organization), the Winston Cup (the stock car championship) and the International Race of Champions (an all-star racing series). Winston is destined to continue the family tradition, Malinda Yerian said.

"My dad (Dirk) is a race car nut. He has recorded every race on VHS since he was 18 years old," she said. "I have been going to races with him ever since I could remember. Hopefully, he'll (Winston) be a big NASCAR fan. All the other grandchildren are already big fans." Yerian said she always enjoyed getting pit passes to go infield and see the race cars, as well as meet famous drivers.

This name has been in the works for a long time. "My dad had said something about Iroc Nascar when I was pregnant with my first son, but my mom talked me out of it," Yerian said. "She thought it'd be neat to name him after my dad, so I did."

Her second child was a girl, so the name was definitely out of the question, and then came the third one -- a boy, she said. "I always wanted to give my son a name that no one else had," Yerian said. "And he seems to like it, because everytime I say his name, he smiles from ear to ear. His eyes pop right open -- he knows his name."

Friends and family have also taken a liking to the name. "My dad bragged about it so much to all the guys at work," Yerian said. "I think I kind of shocked the people at the hospital, but they got used to it. Everyone, except for my grandmother, seems to like it, but she'll get used to it."

Yerian's mother, Tracy King, said she felt pretty good about the name this time around. "I had a dream that I was telling Winston Cup to get out of his grandfather's stock car," King said. "I told Malinda and she said 'Why don't we name him what dad wanted?' I agreed, but we left out the Cup part -- that was too much of a tongue twister."

Although he's only two weeks old, Yerian said Winston has already received his first pair of Dale Earnhardt overalls, with Earnhardt's signature and number on it. "He won't be able to wear it till he's 3 years old, but he's got it," she said. "He's also got a Dale Earnhardt carseat. We've already got him prepared for NASCAR."

Yerian said she looks forward to Winston's career as an auto racer. "His initials spell WIN," she said.

That is absolutely awful. The only thing that NASCAR is good for is mullet hunting.

And here I was thinking it was a joke. That’s just sick. They obviously have no concept of how that’s going to affect the kid when he goes to school (or they just don’t care).
