Disconnecting Battery...

Hey,

'88 XJ Cherokee Laredo 4.0L Auto 4WD.


Due to high power A/V, Computer, NAV Systems on board my Jeep, I have added TWO BIG PHOENIX GOLD CIRCUIT BREAKERS in line with the Battery.

One Breaker feeds the above while the other feeds the engine and vehicle. I can use the overide lever for either one to disconnect from the battery.

When I'm not driving my Jeep for a long period I will hit both overides to disengage the Battery.

Does disconnecting the Battery often have any ill effects on the vehicle's Computer ECU or other? I know stupid q but I had to ask. LOL

If anything, could cause a power serge to the ecu. You could fry it. I would just have gotten a 850cca batt then get 2 batt, thats just me.

If the key is off, your engine computer should be fine. Only to worry about that if the battery is dead or hook up the booster cables wrong.

Worst that could happen is you might loose some driveability settings in a computer but yours may not have any of that. Only the newer cherokees might have this and definitly the Grands have programable shifting and a few other settings that would need to be relearned.

You won't hurt a thing. Let the system power down at least 30 seconds for the ecu to finish resetting the iac. Your Jeep ecu doesn't store codes, or drivebility data. It relearns every start. That is why if you disconnect the tps connector running and plug it back in, and rev it up it will idle fast until you restart.

I think the worst thing would be you might loose the radio preset channels.

Uh Oh! When I was working in the new grease for the windows and door locks I found it easier to leave the ign key in the ON pos and move the levers and switches back and forth on the driver's side then hit the breaker and not switching the ign key OFF until I got the door panels off on the right side greased up the above and then turned on the breaker to do the same again to work the grease in. Did this so as to not drain the battery.

1. Jeep starts and runs fine do you think I may have harmed the Computer doing this?

2. A side note: I plan on cleaning the Throttle Body, Idle Stepper Motor and TPS with Gumout Spray. Should I disconnect the battery first?

3. And, when I clean my EGR Passages I'll spray the Gumout into the openings and stick a coat hanger in to scrape away as much of the carbon deposits as I can. Should I do this with the engine running?

I doubt you have caused any problems with your ecu.

You don't need to disconnect the battery to clean out the throttle body passages. I never do. Don't try to clean the tps sensor itself. It doesn't get dirty, and the spray could ruin it.

Don't try to clean chunks of carbon out of the egr passage running. A big loose one could cause a problem going through the valves. If you scrape loose hard carbon, use a shop vac on the passage to suck them out. Them spray away with gumout. It's a good cleaner!
