I would recommend 60 days for either. Until then hand wash with car wash detergent not dish soap. For protection until waxing use a hand glazing compound, this will provide a protective film that resists contamination but doesn't seal the surface, this prevents solvent problems for the 60 day period but still offers a degree of protection. You will need to re-apply the glaze after each wash.
