problem with lights on dash and instrument panel
2002 Buick Century
When it is lbright outside, all dash and heater illumination lights work great, including lights on radio. When it gets dark or is cloudy, all these lights go out. The headlights, interior light, and light to show what gear i am in will work, but not the rest. Thought it was a fuse, but doesn't seem to be the problem, any suggestions. |

Re: problem with lights on dash and instrument panel
A sensor is used for the automatic headlight system and daytime running lights (DRL). The sensor sounds like it is working because you are getting switching. When it goes to night mode dash illumination goes through the variable dimmer control on the headlight switch assembly. Clockwise increases and counter decreases illumination to the IP and climate control. Make sure it is turned up high enough. The switch can be removed and voltage on the output checked with a multimeter. Also check wiring to it. It will be a varying 12 volts. If missing, problem is the headlight switch assembly. Good luck!

Re: problem with lights on dash and instrument panel
I"m not sure if your car has one, but the symptoms sound like the instrument panel dimmer switch. Try manually turning on your lights. If the same thing happens. It could be your problem. Try calling a dealer and see if your car has one.
