Help! 944 parts!

i am thinking about getting a 1984 porsche 944. A guy i know has one for cheap. Insurance isnt a problem. I just am wondering how much parts run? Are they expensive like jags and etc....even though its a 1984 car? Would I still be able to get them from the dealers? And are there any problems to watch out for on this particular year? thanks

Hi, I have a 944(84) and if you can get your hands on one thats worth it than do it! Here is a great site that contain's parts at a fair market price and sometimes better- http://www.pelicanparts.com/ . Make sure you ask the owner for all, if any paperwork, ask questions!!! Use carfax.com to verify odometer and other such info(its 14 bucks and some change but its worth it!) Here is some recall info

Recent Safety Recalls:
None
Past Safety Recalls:
Recall Alert
Owner Notification Date: 1/14/2000
Component Description:EQUIPMENT:SPEED CONTROL:LINKAGES(12:83)
NHTSA Campaign Number: 85V023000
Recall Alert
Owner Notification Date: 10/26/1983
Component Description:INTERIOR SYSTEMS:ACTIVE RESTRAINTS:BELT RETRACTORS
NHTSA Campaign Number: 83V111000

There are many sites that contain hugh amounts of information on the 944, just use a search engine like yahoo and you will see what im talking about-It was also rated 1 of the ten best cars for its years . I just currently moved to N.Y and im looking to do much on my 944 because parts are cheaper here than in Hawaii. Good luck on your purchase. So far I have had the luck of having a mechanic work on mine for an 84 RX7 that I owned. Labor sucks as with any car but I had bought mine just hitting 80k miles which ment that it was due for some service. Keep me updated!

Lightbulb This Might Help

I just took an 84 944 off a guy about 4 months ago that didn't even run. I spent $2,400 on the engine so far getting a valve job, new plugs, wires, oil filter, fuel filter, K&N air filter, distributor cap and rotor, steering rack, new seals for the front of the engine, etc. It's now running wonderful with the exception of the need for new brakes (which I am replacing this week) and the possible need for new motor mounts (since it idles real rough until 1200 RPMs). I have ordered and received many parts from a guy named Ian from 944online.com. He's done a real good job and has been the cheapest so far. However, parts are not cheap. My friend's 84 Camero Berlinetta required new plug wires and ran for $24 at Checker and Autozone. Mine costed $100 for the cheap brand. Everything I have replaced with the exception of spark plugs and fuel have been at least twice as much as all my friend's cars. Even my buddy's 91 Syclone. But maybe you should check that out for yourself. Ian (from 944online.com) will give you estimates and so will pelicanparts.com. I will tell you one thing though... buying and restoring my Porsche 944 was weeeell worth it. Even as crappy as it looks right now, everyone tells me, "Oh well, it's a Porsche, who cares?!"
