Emissions purge control valve?

1999 Ram 1500, 5.9l. The check engine light came on. I took it to the local auto zone for them to tell me what was wrong. They said it showed an emissions purge control valve. Does anyone know anything about this? Is it the same as an egr valve? The good folks at autozone could only tell me it was a dealer item and our dealer's parts counter is closed today.

Thanks for any help

Re: Emissions purge control valve?

The above truck only has 70,000 miles on it. Should this be covered under the 8 year/80,000 miles emission warranty mandated by the feds?

Thanks

Also where is the purge valve located? My (new to me) truck has clatter that sounds like the purg valve symptoms.
Thanks any info.

Re: Emissions purge control valve?

I've got a 97 with the 5.9, and had the same issue. Mine was the purge control solenoid, and it was covered by the warranty with 74k miles on the truck. Just so you know, the dealer not only had to replace it, but once they did, the light came back on. Turns out that the vacuum lines also had to be rooted out for it to work properly. But it should still be under warranty, so this might be a good time to take advantage of dealer service.

The purge solenoid does something with the fumes from the gas tank area by bringing them up tot eh intakes to be burned off in the motor. This solenoid could either be stuck open or closed - mine was stuck open. Truck ran great, but the dang light drove me nuts!!!

Good luck!

Re: Re: Emissions purge control valve?

Well, local dealer said it was not under warranty. I bought a new valve from them f0r 42 bucks and change. Put it on, reset the puter but light still comes on. How did they root out the vacuum lines. That may be what I need to do now.

Re: Emissions purge control valve?

that's a good question...i let them do it since mine ended up being covered. i think the vac pressure tested the lines and blew them out, making sure no debris was in the them. there's a couple of couplers within the lines, so you may have to go segment by segment. most of the lines are pretty accessible, but they might get tight where they go past the firewall and under the cab of the truck. sorry i don't have anything more specific.

Haven't gotten under (snow), yet but I have checked under hood, and can't locate anything that might be the "purge valve". Don't mind putting on the dunce cap, but If someone could give me a clue on purge valve location, when it gets above 10 degrees I'll take another look. Thanks any info.

Onmy 99 1500, if you raise the hood and look on the right fender you will see a small round plastic object with 2 vacuum lines and an electrical connection going to it. This is the purge valve.

It did help eliminate the purge valve as a source of a clatter noise, I think.

Re: Emissions purge control valve?

On my ram, the 97 1500 with a 5.9L, the purge solenoid is located just behind the air filter and throttle body. It sits between the valve covers at the rear of the engine by the fire wall, and I get to mine from the driver's side of the truck. It is black and about 4" long. You can actually get to it without taking anything apart, including the airbox assembly. Hope that helps.

As info, I was looking for the source of a tapping/rapping noise. The Duty Cycle Purge valve is somtimes the cause.
In this case it turned out to be the torque converter inspection cover. It was bent in and was being "tapped" by a bolt. Thanks to all.
