Newbie Hello & Paint or Decal Question

Been popping in regularly for the last few weeks after discovering the site and seen some excellent work.

My main interests are in rallying and I am in the process of building an Impreza WRC 99 in privateer colours, which has meant having to experiment with some home made decals with 'ok' results. I have added a couple of WIP shots in the Motorsports completed and in progress section of the forum.

But I have also just managed to get my hands on one of these.....

and want to make it into one of these......

Home made decals using water slide paper are a problem for printing in gold and painting looks a little tricky with such fine detail at the front end.

Having never tried anything this tricky before any advice/suggestions on how to paint or decal the Rothmans gold & red stripes would be a great help.

Many thanks and have a good New Year everyone.

You could always source decals from several decal sets to compile the decals for the RAC Legacy.

Studio27 make a gold foil decal you could use for the gold stripes and there are several Rothmans decal sets you could use to get the Rothmans logos.

Thanks for the replies. The stripes are the main problem and the gold foil sounds very interesting. Will have a search on suppliers in the UK.

Subaru Decals

Here is a scan of the Rothmans decal sheet.Save it to your computer and print it out.You can use the scan as a pattern to produce the stripes from decal sheet or as a pattern to make masks for painting the gold.If you look on most hobby sites you can get a sheet of gold decal paper. If the size is wrong (sometimes the images get resized at photobucket) let me know and I will E mail you the scan.
Steve.

Just printed the scan out on my printer and it is slightly on the large side. You could try reducing it on your printer. The number 1's that make up the 11 on the door number board are exactly 11mm high on the decal sheet. If you adjust the size on your printer till the 1's are 11mm high it follows that the whole print will be the correct 1/24th for your model.Hope this makes sense?

Hi Steve,

The decal sheet saved from the forum comes out at around 79mm wide and 300 dpi in Photoshop on my pc.

If it's not too much trouble and there's no rush could you e-mail me a copy direct scanned at 300dpi, full size and then let me know the width of the whole decal sheet (Just the blue decal area on the scan) that would be a superb help.

Oh one last thing do you know what the thin silver stripes on the top left of the sheet are. Are they window/door trims?

Thanks again,

Marco

Re: Newbie Hello & Paint or Decal Question

Hannant carry gold decal paper in the UK... I have ome floating about somewhere. It's not a true metalic like gold foil would be, but looks more like gold paint when applied. If you can't get hold of anything that'll do the job give me a yell and I'll see if I can fine mine.

You definitely going to give the Rothmans livery a go then Marco?
Let me know if you need any reference material, I have some photos of the Rothmans Legacy from the RAC on a CD.

I intend to give it a go, and will be looking to reproduce McRae's last BRC Winning Legacy as below:

But the return to work is likely to slow any progress. Also hoping to pop into the Autosport show mid January which is supposed to have a good array of modelling stands. May help with picking up some gold decal paper, tarmac wheels & tyres etc
