personally i think mine was worth the money. i found it on ebay for $230 and i am very pleased with it. i dont know about only 7 hp but it feels like alot more. you will notice that alot of people on here a partial to nelson tune, im really trying to figure out how that is so much better then a ppIII, some people have had both and swear by nelson but i guess it depends on who you ask. i cant justify spending money on another tune so for now i will stick with hypertech, ( i have nothing to compare it to )

Re: Re: hypertech programmers

While I cannot dis handheld programmers, being I have never used one. They might be pretty damn good. I can say with relative certainty, My Nelson Tune kicks ass and is better. My truck came alive when we got done doing my street tune. I am running 89 octane and my pickup just hauls, so much more that it did before. I am going to be back in texas next month and going back down to do a 91 octane tune with Allen. I know that I can just get it sent to me, but i like doing street tunes. I know its more money for a Nelson, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Re: hypertech programmers

You need to do a search for "tune" and "programmer." You will see comments and the reasons for and against. Dollar for dollar you will gain more mpg/performance from a custom tune. A street tune can be made to fit your style of driving. If that is followed by some dyno time you will see and feel the world change.... A handheld plays with safe numbers/changes and only changes things thinking that all engines and trucks are created equal.

It all depends on what you are after. I advocate Allen all the way. It helps that I now live in the same city..... But if you don't have the money and don't have plans for changes, even more mpg or future mods, the handheld may be your cup of tea.

My '01 was street tuned for mpg and I got the mpg out of it. I was so happy that when I bought "The Sleeper" for performance I knew that Allen was commited to what I wanted. Just imagine, for the life of my truck no matter what I change, cam, octane, exhaust, tires, etc. I can get it retuned for free. That is customer service....

PM me and I will give you some more info.....

Re: hypertech programmers

Make sure we all understand what is illegal....

For a dealer to reprogram it is illegal.

For a private owner of a vehicle it may or may not be according to your local state laws. It is not illegal for an owner to modify his engine parts or to tune it within legal local and state limits.

Educate yourself on what the federal, state and local laws are and then you can do as you feel necassary. Racing is legal, espesially on the track. For me to say racing is legal is not totally true nor is the statement PCM programming is illegal is not totally true either.....

Re: hypertech programmers

Who said we conform to all the regs????? Some of these trucks are for racing and still meet the smog regs WITH PCM reprogramming. They sell parts and when you install parts you need to reprogram to make the part work so reprogram we will......

So if the EPA and Feds dictate exact numbers why aren't the engines in all the vehicles all the same???? The manufacturers meet the minimum requirements and still have room to meet the demands of the general group they are selling to. So there is room to still customize in the vehicle and still meet the regs. So a blanket all programming is illegal because a programmer said so is wrong. Why do we have choices on tires if the program in the PCM uses a specific size? Why does the PCM give you a "Change Oil" light and yet we get to change it when we decide???? Those choices and others DO affect the emissions of a vehicle and are programmed into the PCM.

In fact customizing the tune to meet your driving style will help your vehicle better meet the emissions requirements if done properly. Please prove that one wrong, I dare you......

I have a 02 4.3 silverado. I bought a hpp3 and used the 93 octane tune and really didnt notice anything other than firmer shifts. I put it on ebay a month later. I now have a wait4me tune alot better for me. By the way jethro I got my fans installed thanks for your help.

if you decide to go with a handheld, I'd go with Superchips over Hypertech. I've dealt with both and I experienced a more noticeable difference with the Superchips. Plus the Superchips has a DTC reader.

Re: hypertech programmers

Heres the bottom line. If you want something you can change often, get a handheld programmer, but not a Hypertech. I had one and it was horrible. It caused my truck to ping like hell. Sold it on ebay.

If you want performance, get a custom tune. A tune will blow any handheld prog. out of the water. No questions asked. It's not illegal to have a tune, or me and lots of others on this board would be in jail.

There. War solved. Bye bye.
