Question eratic idleing

I have a problem with a 1995 toyota p/u . my idle is going from about 600 to 975 constantly instead of a smooth idle . there are no diagnostic codes coming up for me to go on and I am stumped.

Re: eratic idleing

I would suspect the throttle position sensor. It probably has an idle switch in it and even if it doesn't, it is still what the ecu goes off of to enter idle mode. The IAC (idle air control) motor is what maintains idle and it is technicaly a possibility.

Re: eratic idleing

Clean the throttle body.

To clean the throttle body remove the air intake hose and examine the intake and throttle body for excessive carbon build up if found then buy a can of throttle body cleaner labeled "safe on oxygen sensors,TPS's and catalytic converters" do not use carb cleaner make sure your engine is fully warmed up prior to using as when the throttle body is hot it dissolves the carbon easily and quickly. The labels usually specify to park the vehicle at ground level (0 degrees,no inclination) and have the engine running but I disagree I instead park the vehicle on a hill facing down and shut the engine off and hold a rag below the lip of the throttle body and poor the stuff and use a tooth brush.

Re: eratic idleing

thanks for the reply .I have cleaned the throttle body and replaced the intake manifold gasket ,I have also replaced the TPS and coolant temp sensor [all of this helped to a certain extent]. the problem remains that on occasion the idle drops to around 500RPMs and tries to die out on me. Iwould appreciate any other advice that you have to offer.

SAME THING HAPPENED TO MY 89 22RE (210K). I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY CHARGED ME 80$ AND SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG. AS I WAS LEAVING A CUSTOMER THAT WAS WATING ON HIS VECHILE INQUIRED TO WHAT WAS WRONG WITH MY TRUCK. I TOLD HIM AND HE ASKED WHAT OCTANE I WAS USING, WELL ABOUT EVERY OTHER TANK I WAS USING A HIGHER OCTANE THINKING IT WOULD HELP CLEAN EVERYTHING UP AND SOMETIMES USING FUEL ADDITIVES. HE SAID THAT WAS MY PROBLEM AND I SHOULD USE THE LOWEST OCTANE AND NOT SWITCH BACK AND FORTH. ALL I KNOW IS ABOUT 4 TANKS LATER MY PROBLEM WENT AWAY AND MY TOY HAS NEVER RUN SO SMOOTH. IDLES LIKE A NEW TRUCK.

Re: eratic idleing

I would agree that it may be carbon build up. A great product to use to clean it up is top engine cleaner at your local GM dealer. Part number is #1050002. With that stuff, you put about half of it into a little cup, then suck it up with the vacuum hoses near the throttle body. (engine warmed up) Once you start doing that, it will make your engine run really rough and maybe even die. (That's ok). Once you get about half that bottle through, let the engine sit for a few hours or over night. When you try starting it, it will take a while to get it going, but once it does, you'll see all kinds of crap start flying out the exhaust pipe. I had the same type of issue as you plus a pinging issue. Getting rid of all that carbon build up in the engine did wonders for mine. Neither of the problems has reoccured.
