96 Grand Am cooling fan-please help

My 96 Grand Am 2.4 is running way too warm. I've replaced the thermostat, but am thinking now that most if not all of my problem lies with the fan. When the engine is at running temp I can turn on the A/C, but the fan won't start until I wiggle the connector at the fan motor. Then when it does start it seems to be running way slow. Is this something that I can fix or does the fan motor need to be replaced? Or could it be something I'm overlooking?

It appears that you have a bad connector that may be causing your problem. Although the problem may be the fan itself. The fan has two speeds and it should come on at high speed when the AC is on. Try replacing the fan relay if that doesn't work you may need to replace the fan assembly along with the relay. The temp sensor could be bad too.

If you want to save the hassle of putting a fan relay switch in a replacing more parts go ahead and run a toggle swtich from the battery to fan and fan to the switch this works great. I have this for my 99 grand am. Once shes warm flip the switch and it turns on. However if your A/C dont work then you only need one fan to run but if ac is working then hook up both easy CHEAP fix

I only have 1 fan and don't know where the switch and relay are.

Would the relay cause the fan to work or not when the connector on the fan motor has to be jiggled, with some force, to make it come on?

Yes, the fan relay is usually what causes the speed of the fan to go up. It sends more voltage to the fan to allow it to work faster. This may be the reason why the fan is not going into the high speed mode. But the connector is probably your biggest problem so either change it to a new one or rewire the fan assembly so that it is hard wired.

If you have to wiggle the plug to get the fan to turn on then the problem is pretty obviouse (sp) A bad connection, a fan relay or switch will not solve the problem untill you fix the connection at the fan.
