aftermarket warranty
I've never bought an aftermarket warranty but I am thinking about it for my '01 Windstar. Anyone have any recommendations or warnings? I'm always afraid that they are a scam.

there were 4 levels of coverage, I got the 3d,, which didnt cover any gaskets unless it was destroyed in the part that broke I used it once on new fuel pump ( dealer did job)$480 $100 deductable I paid,, so I still have 12,000 more to go.. mine was about $1000 for extra 36,000 covered all except gaskets and general wear... brakes, belts, etc,. 48 month loan = about $20 month.. I called to see who could work on the car, they said any ASE mechanic/shop would be OK. |

hey kerk, i bought one from a company called Wynn when i bought a used 98 3.8L five years ago. it was my first time then, too. it covered major parts like engine and transmission. it cost me around $1000.00. It was good for 3 years (i think) or until exceeding 100,000 miles. at 99,000, we had a transmission problem. so we had installed Ford remanufactured transmission with 36month/36,000 warranty. BUT, Wynn warranty i bought only covered aftermarket transmission. it did not cover Ford remanufactured transmission. so Wynn paid the cost of aftermarket trans, like $2000 and i had to pay $1000 to covere the rest.i think Wynn warranty was a great buy, since i paid $1000 and they ended up paying $2000 for the transmission. that was my experience. that was the only time we used it. it is like insurance. you might use it. you might not use it. if you have it and not use it, you kick yourself. if you don't buy it and you need it, you kick yourself. i bought it, because at the time i could afford extra $1000. right now, i can't. good luck. x-)

I paid for one thru the ford dealership where I bought our 2001 LX used in 2003. It's thru 'Interstate' http://www.inds.com/ The package I bought is b/b coverage for 3yrs from the time of purchase or 75Kmi total. It was $1200. So far it covered ~$300 towards a rear brake job. It covered the rear wheel cylinders, brake lines & hardware, even the fluid flush. They went overboard of stuff because the warranty would pay. It's got $100 deductable. See who your shop(s) recommend or who they are willing to deal with. It's a crap-shoot as to if it's worth the $1000-2000, but one major repair and it could pay for itself real quick.
