1997 4.3 Vortec, short block
I'm contemplating buying a 97 Olds Bravada that has a lower engine knock, figuring it is a rod or main bearing giving way. I'm wondering if there are any years of the 4.3 vortec that I couldn't use a short block from, ranging from 92 to 2000+. I'm figuring the 96 and up will be similar, I'm just curious if anyone knows if the 92-95 blocks are the same in case I were to find a good one in that year.

Re: 1997 4.3 Vortec, short block
Best to use a 96+ (or late '95 w/OBD2). The front of the block casting was changed to provide better sealing for the 6-bolt plastic timing cover. This timing cover is needed to provide mounting for the crank position sensor. The crankshaft in a pre-95 engine will not be machined to accept the reluctor wheel of the crank sensor.
