PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU OWN A 1995 OR LATER GM VEHICLE WITH V6 ENGINE
Listen Up GM owners! There is a very well known class action law suit against the makers of "Dex Cool" engine coolant which is used in virtually all GM engines since 1995. It is well documented that the coolant/fluid becomes solidified, which affects all cooling system parts, especially the head gaskets. Common symptoms are loss of heat, overheating, blown gaskets, and at worst a cracked engine block, which is what I believe has happened to my Montana. I am pursuing recourse through the law firm that is championing this class action suit. GM has been of NO HELP...surprised? I think not. Here is the link to the web site of the law firm. http://www.girardgibbs.com/ Here is the link for the form to be included in the class action: http://www.girardgibbs.com/dexcool.html Everyone needs to get on this band wagon in order for us to win. Good luck to us all! For now, R.I.P. 1997 Pontiac Montana with only 60,000 miles.

Re: Class Action Law Suit affecting Pontiac Montana V6 engines AND other GM V6's
Not to deter anybody from joining the class action suit, I wouldn't hold out much hope for a big recourse should you "win". I have been part of many class action suits over the last decade, and after the lawyers take out all their "legal fees", the plaintiffs are usually left with very little in return. The more people that join the lawsuit= lower amount of settlement you receive. I think the biggest settlement check I received was for around $10.

Also Dex-Cool isn't the problem. Improper maintenance and poorly engineered components (intake gasket) that lead to the Dex-cool "problem" is what is at issue. Feel free to "sign up" for the class action lawsuit, just don't expect to see anything. That page has been available for over 2 years now.

And, with the "General" in bad financial shape right now, any lawsuit or judgment would NOT come before any preferred creditors if GM goes under; - and GM could.
The stock is at 50% of its value now. I wonder if Toyota would consider buying GM! Heck Chrysler builds better cars now under Daimler-Benz. Could the Japanese teach the GM engineers how to build better cars? I wonder? . Last edited by 1999montana; 01-06-2006 at 03:52 PM. |

Re: Class Action Law Suit affecting Pontiac Montana V6 engines AND other GM V6's
I agree, Class Action lawsuits seemed to be geared toward making money for the legal profession. Though Class Actions can be a positive force to get corporation to be more responsive, I doubt it will pay any fraction of my bills for replacing faulty cooling system components. I wouldn't waste any time with the class action but instead deal with your local dealer directly.

For the Canadian folks on this forum:
Don't know if anyone has seen this one, but: http://www.asq.org/quality-news/2006...6gmfacing.html Could be interesting. Here's the site: http://www.stevensonlaw.net/ Here are a couple of .PDF links for the class action: http://www.classproceedings.ca/gm%20...20vehicles.pdf If your vehicle isn't listed, there is reference to other vehicles not known (but affected) on the Stevenson site somewhere. You could always inquire to see if yours is covered. Email: Colin Stevenson - [email protected] http://www.classproceedings.ca/gm_ST...T_OF_CLAIM.pdf Looks like you have to round up your repair orders and receipts to submit the statement of claim. . |

Re: Class Action Law Suit affecting Pontiac Montana V6 engines AND other GM V6's
Just some FYI....I have a 2000 Montana that I bought used with 90K on it. I looked at the dreaded intake manifolds, and found them to be in good shape. So, I put in Evans Coolant ( www.evanscooling.com ). In short, it has far superior thermodynamic properties than conventional EGW and DexCool. Because of this, I ordered Evan's 7# radiator cap, which reduces stress on all cooling components. As an added bonus, when I combined it with Mobil 1 synthetic and Lucas additives, my engine rarely runs over 1/4 scale with the A/C on, even on 100+ degree days. With the A/C off, it will run 1/2 scale when sitting still, but cools to 1/4 while driving. I have used Evans in all my vehicles for the past 5 years (96 Cobra, 99/01 Grand Am GT, 97 Riviera, and 00 Suzuki SV650S) and been pleased enough to keep ordering it in spite of its cost. (Plus, it is a lifetime coolant.....check out the site for a pic of a piston with 500K on it where you can still see the part number stamped on the side).

Hole Bunch of HOG Wash. Like they say some people go hog wild. The smart ones just keep there coolant system service and flushed and never have any problems with the coolant. Now the gaskets and intake may be another hog to roast. MT
