Rear cargo subwoofer

Does anyone have a late model sub w/ a rear cargo area subwoofer?? Is it after market or factory and what size is it ?? Finally, is there output control on your tuner??

I had the factory rear sub in my 2000. If my memory serves me correctly, it was an 8".

There is no "seperate" sub control per say, only the "bass" control on the factory head unit.

I replaced mine with an Infinty 8", and it would have been a direct screw in replacement if I hadn't elected to add some amplification and some housing volume (cubic inch) modifications along with some exterior deadening and some interior stuffing to "tighten" response up.

I am a classical and jazz music fan, and my mods were for that reason only.

pnewcomb1, thanks for the response. I have an 03 w/ the Bose system w/o the rear sub and was looking into installing one. I am currently tracing the wiring to see what if any wiring is in place now. Were you successful at tightening the bass response? What volume was the original vs new sub box?
Does/did your system have 1 or 2 subs?

I used an 8" Infinity Reference REF840w driver. The system had one driver from the factory, and it was questionable at best. I drive my Infinity with a Rockford Fosgate Punch 45 bridged to 70w mono at 4 ohms.

The originial enclosure area from the factory was about .3 cubic feet in volume. Since the Infinity likes .35 cubic feet in an acoustic suspension set up, I had to find more room. The fact that the original enclosure was leaky and flimsy were other considerations.

I sacrificed the storage compartment above the enclosure to gain the room. I pulled the whole left side pile of plastic out and started with the epoxy, Dynamat and RTV.

When it was done, I had about .46 cubic feet of space. A rather dense stuffing of polyfill musta brought me to about the Infinity's happy point of .35, because it is tight and very pleasing to my ear.

It took quite a bit of sealing to make sure there were no air leaks. And the entire area was deadened with Dynamat...sheet metal, outside surface of box and inside surface of box.

I have always wondered if sheet metal vibration was part of the original music when I hear the adolescent cars on the street...

End result for me was a pleasing sound and a very factory look. The only compromise was the loss of the storage area.

pnewcomb1, you sound like an automotive audiofile for sure. How did you secure the sub enclosure to the vehicle? Is it suspended in the rear storage compartment or what? Does all that sound deadening material keep the rear plastic panels from vibrating under serious bass?
