Only thing I can reccomend on the fuel delivery issue is to test it with a fuel pressure tester. Some models of Rangers have 2 fuel pumps. The intank is the low pressure supply to the rail pump, the rail pump is the high pressure pump. But yours could more than certainly only have 1 pump. Also, you may want to run the codes and see if you're chasing after the right problem. Pete |

Re: 1987 Ford Ranger 2.9
It sounds like you may need to shim your starter, your starter probablyneeds to be shimed away frim the flywheel a little.
As for as you running out of gas. Anytime you run out of gas you run the risk of burning up a fuel pump, or atleast shortening the life of the pump. The fuel pump uses gas to cool the pump. As was already suggested you may very well have two fuel pumps. If you think the problem is fuel related you should check the fuel pressure. Depending in what kind of fuel injection system you have will determine the fuel pressure you should have. As a rule of thumb a throttle body fuel injection system should have about 8-15 PSI for a two injector system a one injector system will have about 35 or so I think, multiport fuel injector systems will have around 40-45. If you have Multiport Fuel Injection system there is ussually a schrader valve on the fuel rail to test fuel pressure, throttle body stayems you ussually have to tie into the fuel lines to test them |
