Bought a 87 F350: 460ci w 148k miles...

87 F350 dually dump with a plow with 148k miles. Got it for cheap $, so I can afford to put some into it. The oil was very black when I picked it up (I know...not a good sign). It used 1/2 quart of oil on the 150 mile trip home, and noticed a SLIGHT hint of blue smoke while idling in the garage. Runs good but got very bad milage on the trip home (6 or 8mpg) but then again a dump truck with a 9' plow is not very aerodynamic. Also, oil pressure gauge is on the very low side even at highway speeds, and almost in the red at idle. Changing the oil tonight...hopefully will help. Any suggestions to getting some more life out of the motor? Oil pump? On the good side, the motor sounds great, no ticking or anything bad sounding.

Update...Changed the oil and pressure is up a little. Stil toward the low end of the scale. True test will be tomorow when I get it to operating temp. Seems to be leaking alot from somewhere under the engine...maybe the oil pan?

I doubt if its the pan, my money would be on the front seal. Low pressure could just be a bad oil pump. Worst comes to worst, a rebuild on it shouldn't be too expensive.

Check rear main seal.
