LEAKING HEAD that wont stop!!!

hey, i jsut rebuilt my whole engine, and had my head milled and got a new gasket and bolts. but after spending many hours on it i go to start it up and its still leaking oil from the spot. The back drivers side corner. i put my bolts at 50ft lbs and everything was VERY clean. What could be causing this? someone told me yesterday to redo my head agian and spray 3 coats of this copper gasket spray on it. would this fix my problem. does anyone have any ideas?

Well, sounds like something is not straight. Could the head or block be warped slightly? Even just a little bit could make a difference. it's hard to tell without putting a percision straightedge to it, which will be tough now that it's assembled, but thats my only thought

Re: LEAKING HEAD that wont stop!!!

are you sure you torqued it down right? those MLS gaskets require the proper sequence to get them to seal. also SOME copper sealer spray on there is a good idea but not too much. two thin coats is all you need. anyway here is the sequence to use with NEW head bolts.
First All to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.)
Second All to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.)
Third All to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.)
Fourth Turn an additional 1/4 Turn, Do not use a torque wrench for this step.
For the rest of installation, reverse removal procedure.

cylinder head bolts are sequenced as follows:
10 6 2 3 7
9 5 1 4 8

so you start with one, go to two then three etc. first step would be 25ftlbs in sequence then go back and do step two so forth and so on. on the last step, the 1/4 turn its a good idea to use a grease pencil and mark the tops of the bolts with a mark so you know where you started and go from 12o'clock to 12:15.

Re: LEAKING HEAD that wont stop!!!

Make sure you use new head bolts.
The head bolts are "stretch" bolts and only can be used once. If you use them again after they have been stretched already, you will have problems with the head sealing. Because they won't stretch a second time, the torque after the 1/4 turn will be too high and can crack the block. Also, after a short time the gasket will start leaking b/c it will settle some and the bolts won't suck the head down the way it should.

Re: LEAKING HEAD that wont stop!!!

its possible the block is warped. the only thing you can do is take the head back off and look in that area to see what went wrong. it could be abit of dirt or something keeping the gasket from sealing but thats the same area that the oil leaks from when the factory gasket goes so ..

It isnt impossible to get a faulty gasket.I'm sure it has happened to more than one of us,or maybe I am just an unlucky sob.
