Wiper malfunction

I need some advice on a problem that I am having with my wipers.

Originally it started when my wipers were refusing to park in the correct "down" position when I turned them off. When I turned off the wipers, they would park at a position about 1/3 of the way back on a return stroke. I could get them to stop in the correct postition if I turned off the car in mid-stroke when the wipers were at the lowest point in their cycle.

I replaced the wiper motor but that only slightly changed the behavior of the wipers, it didn't actually fix the problem.

Now that the motor has been replaced, when I turn off my wipers, they rest in the "down" position, but don't do that last little pull down under the lip of the hood. Also if I am using the intermittent wipers, instead of resting at the down position, they rest at that same weird spot in mid-stroke in the middle of my view.

Any idea what I can do to actually fix my problem? Some people have said that the relay likely needs to be replaced in my steering column.

Year of car? In a 1992 Buick Park Avenue there is a circuit breaker for the wiper motor, if the wiper motor gets to hot the circuit breaker will protect the wiper motor from overloading. After the wiper motor cools, the breaker will reset. And a fuse also protects the system, which on mine it is fuse #5. You got me on the relay because I didn't think PA's had them.

When your wipers stop in the middle on inter. can you turn the wiper switch to hi, low, etc., and do they work then? If yes it sounds like your circuit breaker is fine. Two other things could cause this, the wiper motor, and the wiper switch. What you explained really sounds like the wiper motor is bad, the electrical deal inside the wiper motor assb. etc. Some great advice, don't buy cheap parts for these cars, you should really buy OEM parts, (exam - ac delco), they cost more but the quality is unbeaten.

If you can try to have this happen with the car in park, then if it does stop, wiggle the electrical connector at the wiper motor, and knock on the black plastic housing. If no results, don't rule out the motor yet, just wait for some more replys here.

Do me a favor, there is a thread on this for your car. Go in the "search this forum" box towards the top of the page and type - wipers - then press go. You will see a list about wipers. Click on the thread that says " Windshield wipers stop in the middle". There is better help for you there! Good luck!

Re: Wiper malfunction

Thanks for the suggestion... It seems that the guy that was having the problem in the thread that you suggested that I read had eventually fixed it by replacing the wiper motor. I did this already; the symptoms got slightly better, but ultimately, the problem is still there.

I'm gonna have to do some more research... Perhaps investigate this park switch on the wiper housing that was discussed in the other thread. I doubt that it will help, but I am willing to give it a try.

Thanks again.

Re: Re: Wiper malfunction

I have heard of GM models with this problem, the control module for the wipers, or the vehicle computer (I can't remember which) needs to be flashed or reprogrammed. Basically it gets confused somehow.
