Exclamation can't shift

My 93 LeSabre wont shift into gear when I depress brake, running or not.
Is there a solenoid that stops the shifter from moving,if so can I by-pass it and how? I know of the switches on the brake pedal but can't determine which one does what

Re: can't shift

You do have a solenoid to lock the shifter unless your foot is on the brake. That feature was installed to help prevent people from putting the car in gear (usually at high idle) and lunging forward or backward and hitting something or someone.

It is a safety feature and needs to be operational.
A new switch should not cost that much if that is what it is. It could also be the solenoid that has failed.

Not sure which switch is which, however I assume one is for the brake lights and one for the solenoid. I don't know if the brake light deactivates the cruise control, but if it does, you only have two switches. Disconnect one and see if your brake lights work, if not, plug it back up and go to the other. Make a jumper to go across the connector to complete the circuit and try it.

I have pulled the connector and there are four wires to which I have jumped every concievable way to no avail. There is also another switch to which I did the same , still with no luck. Is the solenoid a DIY project or do I need to take it to a Pro
