replace or repair supercharger

I have a 2001 GTP. The supercharger is making a noice. Can the supercharger be repair with a kit or does it have to be replaced. Need some advice.

What type of noise...rattling or whining?

Rattling is typically a worn out coupler. Other possibility are the snout bearings. All are replaceable without totally replacing the supercharger.

The sound is a growl or could be a whine. The sound kicks in after 20 mph and up and become s real loud when you take your foot off the pedal. sound will continue until your ready to stop.

If the growling sound is in the area of the snout it could be the bearings. If sound is at the point when snout mates to main supercharger body it could be the coupler. The coupler could give off a growling sound. Hopefully it is nothing worse than that otherwise you may need a rebuild or total replacement. The best thing to do drain it, remove the snout and perform an inspection. Look for broken coupler parts or metal shavings, etc. I don't think removing the drive belt and spinning the pulley will make any difference since the noise doesn't occur until 20 mph but you can try that. I took your advice and bought new coupler and bearings and had them installed. The sound is still there however not as loud. I work for a Freightliner truck dealership and had our lead mechanic do the job. We looked at the gears and they seems solid, no play.

Any further thoughts on the sound? could it be the power steering pump? It seems to tied to the belts. I noticed that when I make a turn to the left the sound lessens but when I turn right it does,nt change much.

Here is a suggestion. Remove the supercharger drive belt and then check for noises. You can run a short period of time without the SC connected. PS pump is a possibility but it drives off the main serpentine drive belt. Have you checked PS fluid level? At least you can rule out the supercharger and the tensioner pulley. Inspect the belts for condition and make sure they are lined up properly. Check tensioners. Also, belts like the Goodyear Gatorback make less noise than stock or other aftermarket.

Don't know if this helps....but, my car is a 98 GT and it has had that PS whine thing going for quit some time now....and yeah...when I turn...it could be concieved as a growling too. The fluid level is fine...but it still does it. Wonder if this is the same thing you are experiancing?

Wonder if I drained and replaced the fluid if the noise would go away?? Hummmm May have to try that

Power steering "whine" is caused by the sound of the pump cavitating.

Replacing the fluid is cheap and easy enough to do either with a turkey baster to suck the old fluid out or on the 3.1L motors you can just disconnect the line since it's more accessible than on the 3.8L.

Most likely though you'll have to get a new pump because what happens is the rotor and cylinder pit and lose their interface tolerance.

Fords pumps cavitate like none other and don't do a good job of purging the air so that's why you can always tell if a car is a Ford in the parking lot just by the sound of the PS pump whine when the person is turning.

If you bought/replaced the coupler and bearings, and this changed the noise but didn't eliminate it, I would take a long hard look at the idler pulleys on the SC belt. I've got 120,000 miles on my GTP and I've been through 2 sets of idlers (first set was a cheap plastic set from AutoZone).
