Re: cluster needle question

to start off i dont think you should remove the needle stem from the electric drive motor, if u used a needle nose plier and held the stem and removed the needle then i think your fine. i think the only needle to really set is the gas meter. I was told to install it at full tank and fill your tank and it should be good. i didnt and it took about 1-2 months b4 it finally set. the temp can be left at cold when u install. what i was wondering, are there light up needles i can get to put on my guages? i would like to be able to shut off or turn the backround lights really low so they dont light up the faces.

Re: cluster needle question

how is it calibrated...that mean programmed into the stuff on that little board or the coil itself?

I has a magnetic wheel inside the motor were the needle arm goes in....and the calibration is done by the amount of voltage and how much wire is wraped around the motor.
I have taken apart many clusters ..the tacho (has3 wires but uses 2 and a spring to pull the needle back to 0rpm or has 3 wires "+","-" and the voltage that comes from the blue wire),speedo are easy to put back. With the fuel needle its like 91CRXTC said ....fill the tank and put the needle at F . With the temp needle you could sust turn the ignition on (engine is cold) and put it in .....or warm the car up to normal temp(just drive about 1-2km then put it at the center

Did it work before? and does it have the same motor like the temp and fuel guage? IF so then you could do a test....just have to find a 12v adaptor and test the motor the needle should jump....if it does test the Blue wire and the other ones that go to the rpm guage....if you got volts then the electronices are fried. Dont know how to fix that....tried then found out that the chip was bad ....could not find a new one.

If the problem is in the electonics then its better to find a new one at a junkyard

One other thing....the rpm guage can get stuck ore the needle arm is slipery....you coult just take the needle of from the arm and stick it in the motor.
OK here is a pic it should show one prob http://www.zone.ee/Deadhitman8/nait.JPG
To fix this there are 2 ways 1) turn the motor upsidetown and hit it gently on the table so that whem the needle arme hits the table the magnet will slip down and will be like it was before removal 2) cut of the bottom of the motor if possible(some motor have a littel part that stick out from the bottom...after doing this just press the arm until you see it from the and just glue the bottom back
Have worked form me sofar.

Like i said remove the Needle so that it comes out of the motor with the metal rod.....then 2 ways to do this 1) put the rod back in without the guage needle...then gently hit the rod side on the table so that the magnet will slide in place....its like with a old hamer or axe ...if the head is loose then you hit the hamer handle side on the table and the head will move down
2) it has a plastrick dome thats sticking out of the bottom ...cut it of but dont damage the wires wraped around it.You should see a hole there and a small metal ball remove these and then press on the side where the ros sticks out....just a little so that you can see it from the bottom ...then but the ball back and oil it a little and then gluing the cut part back.

If you dont take of the needle from the rod then you might breake it.

You could try the things that i was talking about Just remove the motor from the cluster and the needle and guage face so that you just have the motor in you hand and trie to get the rod in correctly.....if its in plase it should fall back to 0 rmp if you lift the needle.....and it will fall to the otherside if its over 6000rpm( or more)

Ill try to find some motors that i have taken apart and take some pics on how to get the rod in the magnet....if you dont get results
