What makes more HP in a JDM engine rather than a USDM engine?

Is it the compression that makes more HP?
or is it something else?

The Japanes have access to higher octane fuel, and so normally all the engines sold in Japan have a higher CR than the rest of the world.

This is done mostly to make them run cleaner, but can also give them a few more HP, since the ECU is also differnt to deal with it. (runs more agressive ignition timing etc)

However some engines like the B16a also have more aggresive cams.
Why no one knows, it either the Japanese being snobs and keeping all the best bits to them selvs, or is Honda only allowing detuned versions to be sold overseas to make it easy to meet all international emissions laws and run on all grades of fuel with out having lots of differnt engines types.

would you be able to run a jdm engine with the same octane we have compared to the higher octane they design it for. would it fuck up the engine?

It certianly won't fuck up the engine, but some of them will not run at thier full potential.

An engine like an old ZC from a 4g Civic will run perfectly, but a newer H22 might be down 10 or more hp.

I run my SiR on 98 Octane Optimax. I tried 96 premium and it ran like shit - well, it wasn't too bad, but the 98 made it run a hell of a lot better.

ZCs should be fine on 96 octane though - that's what was recommended for our ZC CRXs which ran the same ECU/Engine spec as the JDM ones.

Honda Australia recommends 96 octane but suggests 98 is better on all the performance VTEC engines.

Usually it's a combination of cams, ecu, c/r and/or fuel used.

In NZ, we also get 98 Octane at the pump in most places, and I kjnow my JDM B16a2 runs much better on the higher Octane. But with a bit of tuning you can prolly make up for it.

Honda would release slightly differnt vcersions of motors in different countries so they are 'tuned' to suit the fuels and conditions available in each particular country.

Damn, all I can get is 91.

What about octane boosters/additives? Do these really help, are they worth the $$?
