knock knock

I change the oil in my blazer every 3,000mi. It has 130K or so on it. Lately when i start it in the morning the engine knocks for about 1 minute. Whats causing this and is there a possible cure? I was thinking maybe the oil journals are clogged up or something. There was a couple times in this trucks life that i pushed oil changes off to 5-6K miles but i think it was only 2 times.

Are you sure you don't just have noisy lifters? Now that it is cold your oil will be a little thicker and harder to pump through the engine for a few minutes. My suggestions would be change to synthetic oil, Mobil 1 5W30 is my personal choice and make sure you use a good oil filter, anything but fram!!!!! Good luck

Lifters usually sound more like ticking than knocking, i had a 4.0 90 ranger that ticked for about 90,000 miles, and is still ticking. usually quits when it warms up, definatly ticks longer than a minute though, and it comes and goes at random during operation.

and as far as synthetic, i would recomend Castrol. but be careful, they have a type that sounds like its synthetic, but its really not, make sure u get the right stuff. however, i doubt this will help your problem, lifters or not. but if you go that far between changes, synthetic is the way to go.

For the better part of its life yes, however once i found this forum and was told fram is a no no, i no longer use it.

Does anyone think that its just sludged up and could use a good cleaning?

Re: knock knock

You could run a can of Gunk through it or another product to clean out the crap in their.I would not see why it would not hurt because thats gonna help it then go from their.

Yes, a bottle of gunk oil flush, a 30 minute hot idle and an oil change.

What filter do you use.

Re: knock knock

I would do what BlazerLT says on this matter. I did and then I switched to synthetic after the flush. When I did the flush the oil came out jet black and was definitely all sludged up. I actually stuck my pinky finger into the drain hole and moved some more sludge and the rest drained and clumped out. 1st oil change after the flush was done at about 2,000 miles and the truck needed it bad, the synthetic oil (Mobil 1) along with the previous flush still cleaned more sludge out as my filter was really clogged. AFter that I have been doing like 8,000 mile oil changes. Good luck

ps anything but a fram filter. Try wix or Napa, basically same thing and a great filter

Re: Re: knock knock

just out of curiosity, exactly what is wrong with fram filters? i have always used them and never had any problems, i was under the impression that they were good, but if they arent, i will switch.

Re: knock knock

They are cheaply made with cardboard endcaps when all other filters use metal.

They warp easily and will then allow unfiltered oil to bypass the filter element and also will allow all the oil to drain back into the oil pan on shutdown due to the antidrainback trying to seal against a warped paper surface.

Any other filter is better than fram.
