Stalling at Stops

My 98 has begun to kill at stops with no warning (no noise or low idle). I just replaced the fuel pump, spark plugs and wires, and FPR. I had a GM dealer diagnose it for codes and nothing came up (that was the only day it decided NOT to die on me). It usually only dies a couple times a day in the beginning of the day and only after I have been stopped idling for 5-30 seconds. I was going to have a mechanic replace the crankshaft sensors, but finally his scanner picked up 5 codes, 4 of which had to do with the transmission (only picked up the codes after it died). He thinks it is some kind of solenoid in the tranny that has gone bad because there is a solenoid that is known to cause the car to stall at stops. The car drives and shifts perfect, it just stalls at lights after being warmed up for 10+ minutes. If anyone has experience with this please tell me. My dealer repair manuals are on their way but I don't know if this issue is in them. I am wondering how many labor hours a shop will charge and how much the part is.

A dirty EGR valve will cause too much EGR flow at idle, rough idling & stalling at idle will occur.
The valve is located Drivers side near the firewall, remove the two screws ,remove and inspect the valve , if you haven't already.

Thank you apollo. I will have my mechanic look at the EGR valve and change the fuel filter. I took it to a tranny shop and they think it's the crankshaft sensors also. I'm pretty sure it's not bad gas because I run premium (sometimes plus), and I do a lot of highway driving. I just got the dealer repair manuals, so I will look at them too. I suppose if it is not the EGR valve I will go the crankshaft sensor route. Has anyone found codes that link to the sensors when hooked to a computer? When I want the car to die for the mechanic it won't, so his computer can't pick up any codes.

Re: Re: Stalling at Stops

My 96 had the same problem. The throtttle body butterfly was shutting off all the way. I had to replace the idle stop screw and open the butterfly a little and it quit stalling. Btw , the butterfly is what a lot of people call the thing that allows air into the intake.

Re: Stalling at Stops

my aurora used to do the same thing and the only time it did it was when I put regular gas in the car. I just put premium gas in it and it has run fine and had no more problems.

Re: Stalling at Stops

When my crankshaft sensor went bad my tach whould go haywire just before the car stalled out. By haywire I mean the needle would jump around the gauge. If yours isn't doing that I would look somewhere else.

Re: Stalling at Stops

yes the belt and pùlley fixed it
now months have passed and again stalling
but the tach jumps just before the stall
y had arleady replaced crank sensor some time ago
