'02 GTI Check engine light...

Ok heres as much as info as I have, just want to get some feedback before I take my baby in.

2002 GTI 5spd, chipped, cold air intake, diverter valve
had oil changed 3 weeks ago, not sure when last cleaned air filter
last night on my way home my check engine light came on. I wasnt sure if it was from water gettin in my engine (cold air intake + lots and lots of rain...) or what. this morning when I got to work I smelled a burning plastic smell or something, and the light is still on. I looked under my hood to see if anything was on fire lol, but am actually having trouble finding my diverter valve... isnt it supposed to be at the right top corner? I feel like an ass even asking that but I cant find the thing. I am not having any HP/accelleration issues what so ever.

any ideas as to what it could be? if any one could post a pic of their DV vavle, it would be awesome. thanks!

so some one said that the check engine light means something with emissions, and I just had my car smogged a month ago, perfectly passed.... any ideas?
