replace steering rack

I am going to replace my rack because the car has been chewing up front left tires every 10,000 miles. I can get a refurbished rack for $160, but would really like to know how hard and how long it takes the back yard mechanic to change it. I read that the dealers charge 2.5 hours. I am sure it would take me around 2 days. Are there service places that will install a part that you have not ordered from them, Firestone, sears ect...

Also I have found on the web a place that you can pay $25 for a digital service manual. Are these any good? I left the link below so you can check it out.

Thanks
DAve A.

Re: replace steering rack

You just have to call and ask about installing your parts. Most independent shops will, but some won't if they can't mark-up the price on it. That accounts for most of their profit. Alldata is not anything like the factory manuals. It's helpful on basic maintenance and some R&R stuff but lacks detail.
