89 F-250 died while driving, now wont start
I was driving down the road and all the sudden the motor cut off ( 1989 460 EFI.) I killed the battery trying to start it and had to tow it home. I have since changed the fuel pump, fuel filter, ignition module and the fuel pressure regulator. I can also hear the low pressure pumps kick on, and my dual tank selector works too. I also checked the fuel shut off button behind the fuse panel driver side.
The motor really turns hard but never seems to catch fire. It didnt start even with starting fluid in the air intake. I checked my spark but not the plugs, thats next.. I also did a MIL test and got the codes 21 and 24. one is the ect sensor out of test range, the other is act out of test range. I have noticed the fuel rail pressure was only 30 psi. my manual said that there is a HIGH MANIFOLD VACUUM CONDITION (whats that?) that makes the fuel pressure to drop to 30, or you can also be at idle at 30 psi. Is my fuel pressure high enough to start? I checked the pressure back when it was running and it was at 30 at idle, so it seems like it would be fine starting at 30 lbs. |

If are getting fuel and putting Starting Fluid into your Intake and it doesn't even Spark it, then you are not getting ingition. I had this Problem w/ my Ignition Control Module in another Vehicle. Lets hope its just something small. Does this Motor have Coil Packs on each Spark Plugs or just 1 Big Coil w/ Plug Cables ?

EEC IV TFI Module
I just read on an internet search that Ford really stands for, Flat Out Rotten Distributor! Ha Ha . I read that Fords EEC 4 tfi module gets hot and malfunctions causing the motor to die. This has happened to me before but the truck reignited while driving so I just shrugged it off. Thanks for the help, all my tests came back as code 11 now, everything appears to be all right. My buddy has a complete distibutor w/ tfi module I am going to install. I will repost the results as they happen.
Once again thank you for your response and time, much appreciated. Hazy ps any other reasons that have not been stated will still help so please let me know if there might be anything else...... |

Re: 89 F-250 died while driving, now wont start
So I bought a 88 f-250 w/ the same 460 efi engine for $100. Pulled the whole distributor and then installed it into my truck. VVVVRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM!!!!!! Yes my distributor gears retaining pin was sheared off. Needless to say it wasn't my tfi module. My timing must have been throwing some weird numbers to my computer?????? Back on the road and now have many extra parts for later for cheaper than a new distributor or tfi module!!!!!!
Thanks for your responses, and never rule out the distributors gear......I also cant emphasize enough that a good diagnosis is worth alot of money. I almost went out and bought all the new parts($150 for tfi alone) except the distributor. Boy would I have been pissed. But letting time take its toll is worth gold, I found a non running host f-250 for less than dirt soon after the short lived "problem" of my truck....... |
