PLEASE HELP, CAr died out ?? Computer ???

HI,

. While driving my 1997 Jeep Grand cherokee laredo, it suddenly died out. When i tried to restart it it wouldnt' start. It tries and tries but just won't start. A friend used that device to check the signals and he got NO signals at all in my computer! He said it looks like my computer is fried and something shorted it out. None of my gages work at all , but my radio and my lights work . I recently had a cd player installed and when i pulled out the stereo the wired were melted behind the cd player? DId this cause the short? Does anyone know if i just need to replace the computer, my friend said he didnt' see any fuses burned , the link fuses and the rest of the fuses weren't burnt, so he says just replace my computer. Also should i get one from a junkyard here in los angeles? Is there a way to test them to make sure they are good?

Sorry so long, thanks for your time. This is my first jeep and i know nothing about cars
Talia

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

On the fuel rail theres a valve like on a bike tire. Turn the key on but just for power, the fuel pump should prime the cylinders. Then push that valve to see if theres any fuel there. It seems bad fuel pumps and Jeeps go hand-in-hand.

My friend tried that and he said there's no fuel going through, but would that control all my gauges also? Do i need a fuel pump and a computer possibly?? Do u know if there's a way to take off the computer and take it to a dealership to see if its really fried or not?
Thanks so much for your reply!

You need to take the hole thing to the dealer or repair shop and have them put a scanner on it and test it out.
Could be one of many things. Need good check out before you start throwing stuff at it.

Melted wires behind a stereo and no gauges working in the dash would seem to be too much of a coincidence for me. And if the Jeep stopped running when those gauges died, well I'd be going over that whole area real good.
