i have a 96 Blazer with an engine knock and i am getting conflicting opinions on what it is so mabey you guys can help me. When i start the truck it is not so loud but as the truck warms up it gets louder and as I drive the truck the faster I go the faster the knock goes. The truck is not burning oil, losing oil or blowing any smoke and it doesnt seem to be hurting the performance of the truck but boy is it annoying the hell out of me. What do you think it is and how can i fix it.
Thanks |

Re: 96 Blazer Engine Knock PLEASE HELP
You might want to ask Santa for mechanics stethoscope and try to narrow down the location.
I'd rather not see anyone guess on the problem, unless it's an easy to do cheap fix. until after your holidays. Save any christmas cash until you know what the problem is. |

I'd have to agree with clean shaven...If it's a knock, vs a tick and it's coming from the bottom end, your bearing(s) are probably screwed...If you continue driving it it's only gonna get worse until the entire bearing(s) are spun...At this point your best bet is to pull the crank and have it machined and get matched bearings...

Re: 96 Blazer Engine Knock PLEASE HELP
Excuse me for sounding like a jackass guys but can you explain the differance between a tick and a knock because it may be a tick and its loud and also i was just made aware that the truck was driven a good distance on low oil and that was when the tick started.....ahhhh the joy that is marriage.....lol

Re: 96 Blazer Engine Knock PLEASE HELP
A tic sounds like the word, and knock sounds more like what you hear when someone knocks on the door.
I didn't want to spoil your christmas otherwise I would have stated a rod bearing, which adds up quickly in price. If this is the case your almost best to drop in a used or rebuilt motor. If it's a tick it might be as simple as tighten the exhaust manifold, or as complicated as replacing the lifters. None of these jobs are really too bad compaired to the motor swap. Good Luck, and Merry Christmas man |

Re: 96 Blazer Engine Knock PLEASE HELP
Been driven low on oil is not good.
But you need to check it over. As said a stethoscope would help. Also pulling the plug wires on at a time and finding out if it is on a certain cylinder. Also a tick or knock can make a lot of differance. Is the oil pressure normal now? Low or high spells major problems. One time I had one towed into me with a bad knock. It started knocking all at once when the customer started it up one moring. Sounded like the engine was ready to blow. I started it up and listened to it. For some reason i speed it up to 2500 rpm and notice that the knock was getting quieter the longer i ran it. After 4-5 minutes the knock faded away. The moral of the story was it just had a piece of carbon on top of the piston. And I was the customers hero for fixing it in 5 minutes. But yours may alltogether different problem or any of several different things. You will need to test it out good. Good Luck MT

Re: 96 Blazer Engine Knock PLEASE HELP
Tahoe44
You are welcome. Like said in upper post check upper exhaust and also check the rocker arms and lifters. sometimes the come lose or wearout or lifter gets weak. Also crank or run engine with valve covers off and watch the rocker arms for good up and down movement. Sometimes a cam lobe wears off and will not move the rocker arm or lifter enought. Good luck.
