Loud noise when driving/bearing?

I have a 2000 Hyundai Elantra. When I first got it, it had a custom exhaust on it, so it made a lot of noise. I got a standard muffler put on, but it still makes a very loud noise when driving. The noise sounds like a car with a large exhaust, without the annoying flatulence sounds, if you know what I mean. At first, it was thought to be an exhaust noise, but when driving and turning the engine off, it still makes the noise. The only time the noise subsides slightly, is when I go around a left corner. Driving straight or taking a right corner the sound is consistent. It doesn't matter how fast or slow I am going, the noise is very consistent. One thought was that it could be a bad bearing? If anybody has any troubleshooting suggstions, I would very much appreciate it. Thank you.

I'm experiencing a similar problem... Did you ever figure out what was causing this?

Re: Loud noise when driving/bearing?

I had both rear wheel bearings replaced but they were not making noise. They were loose if you grabbed the wheel and shook it. If they are real bad the will howl and you should also hear some grinding particularly when going slow or slowing for a stop.

Re: Loud noise when driving/bearing?

Sagacity,
I did figure it out. it was my left side (driver side) rear bearing. If the sound subsides when you turn left I can guarantee you that it's that.
It's easy to to replace you can by the complete hub at Parts Source for around $130 Cdn and about an 2 hours of labor if it's your first time.

Lightbulb Re: Loud noise when driving/bearing?

I too am having the same problem on my wifes 200 elantra. We thought it was the half shaft(drive axle) on the driver side. We fixed that and it still does it. The wheel is not loose at all. there is no play anywhere. if i jack the car up off the ground and drive the wheels it doesnt make it. It only makes the noise when you turn to the right. it is fine when turning to the left and it only does it when there is weight on the tires. any ideas???
