o/d off light flashes

My 99 windstar has recently started flashing the overdrive off dash light at low speed. Clears up usually after i get up to driving speed. Seems like it might take longer to go off on colder mornings.
Anybody had this problem before?

From my 2000 LX 3.8 owner's manual, regarding the overdrive light:

"The light may also flash steadily if a transmission malfunction is
detected. If the light does not come on when the Transmission Control
Switch is depressed or if the light flashes steadily, have your vehicle
serviced as soon as possible, damage to the transmission could occur."

First things first: Is the fluid at the correct level? Note the the transmission fluid is checked with the vehicle warm, running and parked on a level surface.

Take your car to the shop and have them check the codes. I had a problem last Thanksgiving (2004) in my wife's 2000 Windstar. On hers the light wouldn't flash until we got going down the highway a little ways and would stay on until I turned the vehicle off and restarted it.

We ended up having to have the transmission rebuilt (new torque convertor, shift sensor, etc.). Thank goodness for aftermarket warranties.

You could have the codes read at a reliable shop...you want the transmission codes....which may not come up on the autozone's scanner.

If it gives a TRS (Transmision Range Sensor) code..... That is the switch assembly that is on top of the transmission. The cable that comes from the gear selector on the steering column connects to it. The TRS can be bought and replaced without tearing into the transmission.
