changing coils

hey guys i think my ignition coils went out, it seems to be a typical lincoln ls problem but anyway could i get some guidence on how to change them?

Which engine and model year? I could e-mail you a PDF of the service manual procedure on changing them if you'd like. If so, private message me with an e-mail address for you that can accept PDF attachments.

However, if your coils have gone bad, keep in mind that there is a good chance they failed due to a leaky valve cover gasket set. If that is the case, you should be prepared to change the gaskets at the same time, otherwise those new coils will soon fail too.

The service manual steps should be in your inbox.

Symptoms will consist of a misfire most often. Sometimes (but not always) this misfire will be bad enough to set a diagnostic trouble code of P030x where x corresponds to the cylinder number (if "x" is "0" this means the PCM was not able to determine which cylinder(s) is/are misfiring).

There are probably other symptoms of a failing coil, but I can't think of what they'd be.

I really appreicate it. I had the manifold gasket replaced, the PCV and also, new spark plugs. The car still sputters, and after driving for extended periods the car will shut off when waiting a red light. Can you send the manual for changing the coils to [email protected] . A million thanks.

The attachment is on the way.

Based on your description of your symptoms, you will also want to inspect the EGR system and vacuum lines. An EGR valve that's stuck open or a cracked/broken/disconnected vacuum line could cause rough idle and stalling at idle as well.

Will inspect EGR sys, my bad, I have the V6 LS not the V8. The coils on the left side are under the manifold. ??????????? oh, when the gasket was replaced, the vacumm leak was taken care of. So, I will check the EGR, hopefully this does it. But, I will like to have the LS V6 manual or were can I get it??????????? Thanks again.

My son has 04 ls V6. Autozone scan codes p0352,p0353, p0355. changed plugs on 4,5,and 6. Swapped coils on 4 and 5, had codes cleared, #5 still showed bad. Took to mechanic. He checked codes, tested coils, checked plugs,& did compression test. He replaced coils 4,5,6. (I furnished O'Reilly coils.) After driving a couple miles, "cel" again with same miss. Mechanic scanned again and got p0300, p0316 & p0355. His conclusion after talking to a former ford dealer mechanic is flash pcm driver. Took to dealer who said it had been flashed previously. New consensus is bad pcm. Took to autozone just for kicks and code p0352 was there as well. I want to change plugs and coils 1,2, & 3. Can you send me info for this side of engine? Does coolant have to be drained? Do I need to replace gaskets on this model? What do you think about the bad pcm theory and how do I take it out? I plan to send it out for repairs if needed. While you have the intake off for the bank 1 coils I would suggest replacing the spark plugs with OEM-style plugs and go the few extra steps to check/replace the PCV valve rubber elbow. Ford PCMs don't fail all that often so I would be hesitant to jump on that conclusion.

The intake manifold gaskets are reusable as long as they are not damaged.

It's not unheard of for the PCM to fail in this way. Leaving bad coils in for far too long can cause PCM output driver failure. That said, it really doesn't happen that often. Before you condemn the PCM, carefully check the wiring between the coils and the PCM, including the coil end connectors and the PCM end connector. The service manual gives the steps to take and electrical measurements to make to verify the wiring harness.

BTW, simple resistance checks on the coils do not detect the most common failure mode (internal HV breakdown) of the coils of the LS. Ford has a TSB out that explains how to stress the coils and take readings using an oscilloscope to determine if the coils are good or not.
