WRX through the twisties

So I finally did Old Pacific Highway...my first time, and I decide to do it at night! It's everything that it's been hyped up to be. And at night, it is just so much more fun. For the non-Aussies i.e. 99% of you all This is a 3 lane highway (1 north bound 2 south bound) that is very twisty, most bends have recommended speeds of 20-30mph (and usually come 3 or 4 in a row). Although not very hilly, the terrain is definitely not flat either and is pretty rough bitumen. It is advertised as being one of the best drives in Australia.

Althought, since I wasn't alone, I did it quite slowly (my avg speed through it was probably around 45-50mph), which surprisingly did not dull the sense of speed and fun. Being at night, the tall cliffs and the narrow windy road meant that there were quite a few blind corners. I went through it twice, and on both times I got caught out...on two different corners though. Luckily with all wheel drive, it just lead to some tyre squealing and a big adrenaline rush.

The second time through it, I obviously got a bit more ballsy and I did it a lot faster. The corner I got caught out on was damn scary and sorta cool. Because it was a sharp curve and the cliff was on the outside, it felt like I was squealing into the cliff, but didn't. I guess perceived loss of traction i.e. tyres squealing and actual loss of traction i.e. drifting into a cliff, are two very different things.

I can't wait to get new tyres (the kumhos suck so bad), shocks and lowered springs and do it again. Hell, I just can't wait to do it again.

I know I'm just giving my own car props and each unto their own and I also love leaving people at the traffic lights as much as the next guy; but in all honesty, I got used to the straight line speed after about 2-3 months (granted my car isn't that fast). However, since then, I've been just looking for twisties, and I'm yet to give up the chance of going through some tight bends at twice the speed limit

Damn, it's 3.14AM, it took me 1 hr to drive back home and I'm still high on the adrenaline rush!!

thats pretty cool, all of the roads where i live suck. theres like one good turn, and thats it.

alot of straights here and corners you can take at 80 with my truck...
the one curvey road or two are now guarded by the popo at night or have deep ditches iwth trees on the otherside.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect the American terrain to have a lot of mountainous areas with nice roads. That's why drag racing is so popular there I suppose. Same reason why the hill climb is so popular in Japan.

Us Californians have a Pacific Highway, much the same... mostly through southern Cali it's populated and has millions of traffic lights, and traffic.

But if you get north between San Fransisco and Santa Barbara... oh man, that's some pretty road. It's everything from fast sweepers to tight switch backs.

Did it in a motor home one year, that was some hairy shit sitting passenger going southbound put me on the coast side, which ment down the cliffs was rocks and water and sitting 6-7ft off the ground made it feel like you were hanging over the rail.

I did it another year on a motorcycle both North and South, a great ride... highly recommended for those who have never done it.

western ontario has some sweet hills. some of the best i've seen in canada (albeit i don't really remember the roads i've seen in alberta and bc). nice story man, enjoy the aussie countryside.

The Grapevine is the shit and the 5 is like a massive high speed run, for 300 miles. I love driving in Cali.

Hey, Matt have you ever been on the highway that connects Reno to California and goes over/near Lake Tahoe? That road is pretty twisty and very fun with some nice elevation changes. I drove from Texas all the way to California over the summer and went to Vacaville at the end. But from the whole drive the one thing that stood out in my mind was that peice of road because of how fun it was to drive, if you're ever bored you should go check it out..

Nope, never been to that part of the state... California is big state... lots of area to explore.

Some of us like twisties. i like twisties...if i had a car id be down at the Gainsville Autocross Track more than at school.
Drag racing is a measure of Mechanics skill IMO.
