97 lasabre fuel pump amperage

Hello I need some help with my 97 lasabre, this problem is intermitten and has been happening for about the past 6 months. The car shuts down while driving but when that happens it will start almost immediatly, but when it is shut by me then restarted, it does not always restart. It seems that it takes a few minutes maybe 5-20 before it will restart, also it seems to want to start, like its flooded or something but I know thats not happening. I replaced the fuel filter which was in need of replacement anyway and tested the fuel pump, I found that the fuel pump has a genral amperage of 9 amps and dips to 8 amps every 7 millaseconds. I know that this is not normal but I can not seem to find out what the proper amperage listing for these fuel pumps anywhere, I know that genrally electric fuel pumps range aroung the 4-5 amp range, can anyone help me out with this? I want to replace the fuel pump but I do not want to get into this if the proper operating amperage is supposed to be this hi on these models. One can never tell if this proper operating range if the manufacturer does not make the information available!!!!!.......Thank you.

Hello Carcraz

First off..welcome to the forum. There is a lot of good information already posted on this forum and a lot of good people reading and posting.

How did you test your pump amp load? If I have the equipment I'll test mine and see what it reads. I have a dig mulit meter.

I found my 97 to be dying because of a poor ground by the battery. There are several wires on this ground stud. Pull it apart and clean it. I may or may not make a difference.

Regards

Dan

Hello Dan and thank you for the warm welcome!
We tested the fuel pump using a pc based pico scope, tested the pump and then printed out the scope reading which clearly shows all detail, we tested it while the car was running while measuring hot and ground leads to the pump and you should have no problem using a digital multi meter so as long as it measures amperage.I will check out the ground situation, Hey thanks alot for the reply and your help is greatly appreciated!! if you need any more info please just ask.
Thank you for your time and efforts.
Victor

Victor, welcome aboard! This forum is here to help you and many of the posters have an immense knowledge of the Buick's mechanical and electrical systems.

From the sound of your symptoms, you could have a bad fuel regulator. I would fist test the fuel pressure at the rail and see if it will hold a steady pressure (38-45 psi range) while running. If you can catch it in one of its "no start moods", test it again and see what you have.

Of course you could have electrical or sensor related problems also. Do the pressure test first and we will go from there.
