Tranmission fluid change time
1999.5 2.0 jetta 100,000 miles. A heap a scrap metal. Nothing but problems since I bought it, 100,000 miles ago. Every time I think I got it all straight it comes down with new issues. The transmission has been a misstery since day one, it shifts like a overloaded tractor. The dealer techs have checked it over and over and always say it's normal while the heap was in for other problems they can't ever seem to fix. Now that it's hit the magic 100,000 mile mark time to change the tranny fluid, is this a simple job? I looked and there appears to be a plug and thats it. Drain it then pump it back in? Filter? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I figure its alittle low, as when I turn corners it acts up not knowing what gear it wants to roll in.

thats all you need to know, the first year of production of a new vehicle always has the most problems. its not untill after the engineers figure out what they did wrong that you get a good car (2002+) i would just reccomend a vw dealer doing it. you need a scan tool to access the tcm to determine what temp the transmission is to correctly fill it.

I have a 2002 1.8T jetta and am somewhat feeling better to hear that your 2.0 causes many problems. I wanted the turbo but it has been plagued with problems since day one. Guess it is not the engine, just a VW. I have to say they are fun to drive but a piece of $@*& as far as a car.
I will NEVER buy a VW again. I have babied mine since day one and the stealership has done all the work. I still have toyotas and hondas sitting in my driveway that have over 100k on them and still run strong with NO PROBLEMS.

you can either do it yourself or have the dealer do it ... just be advised that VW makes their own tranny fluid ... i learned the hard way that you cant use any tranny fluid ... had a local speedy lube place do the job with the oil change and they didnt know it needed the special VW fluid ... now 2nd gear grinds for the first 2 or 3 shifts when i start the car ... the fluid also cost about $25 for a quart
