Sunfire transmission problem

when im doing anywhere from 30- 50 mph if i dont have the pedal either half way to the floor or more or my foot off of the pedal totally the car surges sort of. Like its shifting back and forth between gears. A guy at a tranny shop took it for a ride and said he thought it was fine but it seemed quite shitty when i was drivin it later that night. I dont think its slipping. It feels like the torque converter is hooking up then letting go, i dont think the clutch is slipping. I just bought this car with 92k miles on it for 3k total id hate to drop 1000+ in it for a new tranny

It could be as simple as an air leak or filter/fluid change or as complex as a new trans.Change the filter and the fluid. Check around for air leaks(broken hose, gaskets, etc.) this could be the source of the problem. It would be a lot cheaper then a new trans., cross your fingers. If this doesn't help improve it and you can live with the surging of the trans., add some trans. conditioner and just keep driving it. I just bought a 96 Sunfire with 108000 miles and mine seemed to up shift to early when taking off. I added Seafoam trans. conditioner, drove about 200 miles, changed filter and fluid. The trans seems to shift better, not great, but better. I decided to not worry about it unless the trans. really gives out. I just keep driving it and actually, I've kind of gotten used to the way it shifts. Good Luck
