Well. I give up..

Hello Folks I hope you can help.

I took my wife to the doctors yesterday and went to turn around in the end of the parking lot an my bird just DIED...Quit running..

Tried to start and it turns over but it sounds like it is turning faster than normal.

My bird is:

86 Firebird
2.8 V-6
Auto

All stock as far as I know.

Turn the key on and hear the fuel pump for a few seconds.

It just shut down,,,, No sputter, knock, just like I turned the key off.

Thanks for any help

86 Resurected Bird

Re: Well. I give up..

umm ignition system. when was last tune up....replace spark plugs, distributer cap and rotor, spark plug wires, and get a msd blaster coil. the one for gm cars with the 2 connectors. install all that and see how it goes. and replace air filters.

Re: Well. I give up..

I had this happen to my blazer the other day.. try having someone hit the starter with a hammer while you try to turn it over, if it starts, its time to replace your starter

Well, if it was running and just died, it could be fuel related...especially since you say it is turning over faster than usual. If you have a fuel pressure gauge/tester, hook it up and see what your pressure is at. Since you hear the pump, it is possible that the fuel filter is clogged though it should have given some warning signs such as sputter or poor running prior to quitting. Otherwise, the fule pump could be running but not delivering the pressure to run the car. So that is what I would check out first. Only other thing to check real quick would be spark. Make sure youre gettting spark to all the cylinders or at least off the coil. If there is fuel but some sensor took a dump, then you may not have had any warning and a no run condition as well. If it is a sensor, it is electrical and I can't describe it well on here without actually seing the car. Possibly crank sensor, if equipped that year, MAF, MAP, TPS, etc...all if it has them that is. Thats all difficult to check or at leats time consuming so i would start with the basics...fuel then spark. Good luck.

Well, took New Years Day (hang over and all) and did some trouble shooting. Had power to coil, power to distributor, nothiing out of distributor. Replaced control module in distributor and fired right up and running better than ever. $36.01 and a couple of hours later. Thanks for the replies.

I can't believe I didn't suggest that before...since I had that problem with my '87 305...guess i thought the '86 V6 wouldn't have it. Well, glad to hear its running again.
