99 dodge dakota power loss between 50-60 mph?

I own a 1999 Dodge Dakota SLT 4 x 4 with automatice transmission O/D with a 5.2 L magnum v8 with 22,000 miles (actual mileage). Recently my truck started becoming sluggish between 50-60 mph. The power loss is noticeable. Up to 50 mph and after 60 mph there is no problem. Cruising between 50-60 mph is no problem. Accelerating past 60 mph is where you notice the problem and especially while climbing hills. I added fuel and carbureter cleaner with no success. I purchased the vehicle a few months ago and I'm unaware of any previous mechanical problems or parts replacement. Looking for some help. Thank you, JPJ

I'm not sure if the 5.2L V8 is the same as the 3.9L V6, but with these engines you don't have a timing belt tensioner. As the timing belt stretches and becomes a little looser, it will rattle at idle against the casing. Also it will affect the timing of the valves throughout the RPM range. Possibly this could be your problem as well. Just one of many ideas.

I appreciate the response and I will check into the timing belt. You mentioned "many ideas". Can you tell me what your ideas might be. Thanks againk, JPJ

Re: 99 dodge dakota power loss between 50-60 mph?

Do these trucks have Mass air flow sensors? That could possibly need to be cleaned to get the proper air/fuel mixture. Maybe the spark plugs, wires, air filter need to be replaced, or perhaps it just needs a tune up. Maybe you're getting some bad gasoline. I'll always look for new gas stations to fill up at. Old stations have had their fuel tanks underground for a long time and can have sediment in them or fuel separation. I would continue using fuel injector cleaner (get the concentrated stuff).

Has the auto trany been shifting at the right RPMs? It would definately lag if it was shifting too early. Does the automatic have an overdrive? can you switch it on and off? Hope the ideas help.
