Code P0420 (update)

I submitted a post (quite a while ago) about my car having the P0420 code and my mechanic telling me that I needed a new Cat and one 02 sensor. I pretty much ignored him because the car was running fine and I did not want to spend almost a thousand dollars to fix a car that drives perfectly fine. Unfortunately, my emissions test is coming up so I took the car in today (to a different mechanic) and told them to do the diagnostics again and if it has the same problem, just to replace the sensor in case that is what's causing the CEL...before spending the big bucks on the cat. Turns out that the cat is fine but I have a beautiful crack in my exhaust manifold. The mechanic says that the manifold and the cat converter is an all-in-one piece. Is this correct? Anyway, they're fixing it. Price: $740 (not too bad, right?).

Re: Code P0420 (update)

the cat cel does not effect driving performance. it is soley just for emmissions purposes. if your going to spend $700 + just to change out the maifold/convertor, your better off going to honda yourself and buying the manifold and convertor and doing it yourself for $450. even for $450, id just be patient and wait till one pops up in the classifieds and buy it used.

you can buy a used oem manifold and convertor for less than $150 on ebay, honda-tech.com, recycler.com, etc.

you can also go aftermarket with the header and cat for less than $200. smog the car when the cat is new.

just a few options for you to look at. there are better routes to go.

Re: Code P0420 (update)

Well, it's done now. Thanks anyway. I'm a woman who knows next to nothing about fixing cars although I probably know a lot more than most women! Looking at the bright side: I didn't have to replace the o2 sensors

So much for the extra bonus check I got (we got 2) - my car just ate it.
