Thumbs down Wipers sound like finger on a chalk board

Driving down the road and EEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKK EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEkkkkkkkkk the wipers started sounding like fingers on a chalk board. Well I thought maybe a small rock or something on the blade was the cause but nope thats not it. I think maybe the motor is starting to go south on me. Is it hard to fix? Whos done one and how did ya do it?

Re: Wipers sound like finger on a chalk board

On the first generations it's a pretty easy job. Pop the wiper arms off, and I think 4 bolts holding the body panel on underneath. Then the linkage is easily accessable. Probably a 45 min job. On first gen you could probably do the job without pulling the wiper arms and body panel off, but it's easier.

I might be passing through sometime around new years, and if I have extra time I could probably give you a hand. But you shouldn't really need it.

Re: Wipers sound like finger on a chalk board

I had something similar happen with my wipers. Found out that the little metal srip in the wiper blade itself was sticking out and was a little bent, so it was rubbing into the glass. Luckily I caught it before it had a chance to permanently etch the windshield.
Just a thought..

Don't rule out the Wiper Linkage. They too have pivoting points that could cause your noise. Sometimes just a little white greese will do it.
