94 Trans Port will not start

1994 Trans port---
I drove to work, came out 8 hours later and it won't start. The lights come on and stay on. Turn the key and there is nothing. No click no whine. When I let go and the key returns to the inital position it makes a slight whirring sound. The battery and alternator were replaced a few months back. It is stuck 60 miles from home right now so any help is appreciated!

As I read it word for word, I understand there is no "whine" at first "turn ON" of the ignition switch..that is you do not even hear the 2 sec fuel pump burst...then turn to start position ..nothing at all ..then on release of the key then you hear the fuel pump whine for 2 sec. To me it sounds like the ignition switch has gone haywire....
Correct me if I miss something. In the mean time, may be this can help.

IF in fact you get the fuel pump whine at the first turn ON, starting is inhibited if the neutral/park switch is not in right position, so may be jiggling a little with the shift stick could position it properly....just for a check, put it in reverse to see if back-up lights turn on...
