1989 Blazer remote oil filter help

OK i have a 1989 s 10 blazer 4x4 with a 4.3 liter all of a sudden the oil filter seal blew and now it keeps doing blowing oil filter seals it i pulled the remote oil filter lines from the oil filter housing and i am getting a steady flow of oil throught both lines. i know one is suposed to be an inlet and the other an outlet so im trying to figure out why i am getting oil preasure throught both lines if anyone can help that would be great. thanks

The only thing that makes sense to me is there's probably an internal seal gone.

I would take the complete remote unit off the motor and see if there's a plug that's popped out or a blown o-ring.

Did you clean the remote filter housing after the first seal blew? There could be some of an old seal still there which is causing the leak.


Now for the pressure in both lines. I would bet that the gasket in the unit that attaches the remote lines to the engine has blown. Allowing oil pressure to be forced into both lines.

Follow the lines to the bottom of the engine. you will see where the lines hook into the remote housing. Pull the housing and look at the gasket. Then replace the gasket with a new one. Make sure you clean all the old gasket off both mating surfaces.

I have blow that gasket before. But it was leaking to the outside. Everyone thought it wa the rear main seal....big bucks. Luckily I found a honest shop that only charged me $85. The shop could have taken me for several hundred.

i agree, The part mounted to the bottom of the engine block may have a blown gasket separating the two sides allowing all the pressure to go to the filter . It is difficult to get to though . Rob

There might be a secret to removing the remote oil unit on the 4.3L.

It might even be worth it to start another thread asking.

I know that there is on the 2.8L motors.

The unit on the 4.3 is easy to get to. The hard part is removing the remote lines from it.

I don't think you need to remove the lines to replace the gasket.

Just undo the retaining bolt that holds the remote lines near the power steering pump and undo the line at the filter housing and you should be able to rotate the gousing at the engine enough to replace the gasket.

I suggest removing it completely. Easier to clean and I sanded the mating surface on glass for a better seal sfter cleaning off the old gasket.

I'll try to get pictures of it later.


This is a 92 'Z' code engine. Not sure if it is the same.

thanks guys for all the information those lines look like a bitch to get out so i tried and i cant get them by the oil pan and the front differential. i did clean the oil filter housing when i had it off and that is good so i narrowed it down to somthing inside the engine or on the bulk head that the oil lines bolt to the block. i hope its not a blockage in the block is that a possibility? what do u think because im trying to keep this on the cheap side. it ran good and then this happend hopefull i can fix it.

I just can't see it being blockage in the block.

I truely think that it'll be pretty obious when you take the assemboly apart. It's gotta be in there.

I don't think it is a blockage. Sounds like the gasket blew. That's the only way I could figure that you would get pressure on both sides.


You have to unbolt the lines from the remote enging housing to get them out. I tried that and was the reason I had to replace the gasket.
