99 Alero won't start

My 99 alero won't start. It was working fine all until yesterday when I put my key in, turned it, and nothing. It made a little sound like it was going to start but then nothing. No lights on the dashboard no sound when i turn the key. I tried jump starting the car (since there was no ignition lights) but that didnt work either. I also tried the security lock procedure that someone posted earlier and that didn't work.
The battery is only a couple of months old. I guess it's not the battery. Could it be a bad alternator or starter?
I'm not familiar with this........any response would help me
I appreciate it

No lights at all? Could be a loose battery cable.

I got a new battery and the car started but I still have no lights on the dashboard. I checked the spark plugs and they were pretty worn out. Could that be a reason I have difficulty starting the car and no lights on the dash?
