Help Clutch Rattling Noise...

I just purchased a 92 3000GT SL with only 40K very nice shape. I have found that when I leave the car out of gear and the clutch released ( not pressed down ) there is a rattle coming from the front area of the car. When I press the clutch in the rattling stops. The car runs fine and drives fine but I am curious to see if anyone else has encountered this problem. The car is completely stock no MODS at all. Have any idea?

Re: Help Clutch Rattling Noise...

My guess (and this is a really big guess) but it sound like the throwout bearing is worn (which might explain why the rattle goes away when you press the clutch in)

I done some testing last night and once the car warms up it does not rattle. I even took it to a transmission place and they could not detect the rattle or find anything wrong doing a test drive. Thanks for your help so far. I was wondering if this particular situation has happened to any of you.

Re: Help Clutch Rattling Noise...

i drove a shop truck for a while when i worked at a mechanic shop. there was the same rattle in the transmission when the clutch was engaged and in gear. but when the clutch is disengaged (clutch pedal pressed), no rattle. Boss (master mechanic)said it was the throwout bearing...he said that's the only thing it COULD be. but it didn't affect the car's performance at all. actually, i still think it rattles 3 years later. drives fine.

but if i were you, i would want to fix the rattle, since its your daily driver (and a shweet 3/S), which is no shop truck for hauling crap around.

yeah, i had the same problems...basically....you're spending money for the work...the throwout bearing is 28.88 from discount auto..and 6 hours of work...pulling the tranny out sucks..

Re: Help Clutch Rattling Noise...

pizza dude is correct. its an easy swap and a cheap part. only hard part is dropping the tranny and putting the tranny back in...ALL LABOR.

Re: Help Clutch Rattling Noise...

yeah, as both of them said... LABOR... the part is only $30 roughly... but correct me if I'm wrong guys, but won't u need more transmission fluid?... b/c I spilled alot when dropping my tranny... so I'd suggest getting some beforehand, so you don't run the tranny dry, or have to stop mid project to go pick some up...

Re: Help Clutch Rattling Noise...

yes, you'll need more tranny fluid b/c when you drop the tranny, you have to remove both half-shafts (drive axles), and doing this will drain the tranny partially. if you want to change to a different tranny fluid, this would be a good time to do so. but remember to drain ALL the fluid out via the drain plug, then fill back up.

Re: Help Clutch Rattling Noise...

yeah... it's not really a good idea to mix fluids, especially not if one had been used/burnt... that'll screw everything up...

Re: Help Clutch Rattling Noise...

i dropped my tranny to install my LSD insert, and i just had a friend help me. didn't even need a transmission jack. the VR4 transmission is only about 80 lbs and can easily be dropped with two people. the FWD transmission is only about 60 lbs. its doesn't look that light, but it is.
